Mount Baldy pushed me to my absolute limit. This is the toughest trek in my Arizona’s Highest Peaks series — a full 19.4-mile wilderness loop with altitude challenges, fallen trees, volcanic slabs, and some of the most stunning high-country meadows in the entire state. We entered the Baldy Wilderness at sunrise, crossed the headwaters of the Colorado River, climbed through dense forest with countless downed logs, and eventually reached wide-open volcanic ridgelines with unforgettable views. After 12 hours on the trail, this hike humbled me more than I expected… but it was worth every step.
