Zhenwu Dadi, also known as Xuantian Shangdi, Yousheng Zhenjun, Xuwu Dadi, and variously titled as Dangmo Tianzun, Baonen Zushu, and Pifa Zushu, is a prestigious deity among the Taoist immortals. He is the main deity in charge of military and warfare in Taoism, belonging to the 'Beiji Zhenwu Puyou Zhenjun' among the 'Four Emperors', governing the northern region, and hence also called Beiji Xuanling. Closely associated with the Seven Northern Constellations (Xuanwu), he has a profound astronomical background. Ancient books such as 'Chu Ci' and 'Shiji' mention the northern deity Xuwu. According to the theory of Yin-Yang and the Five Elements, the north belongs to water, so Zhenwu Dadi is also regarded as the god of water. He is in charge of wind and rain, possesses the divine power to control floods and droughts, can quell water and fire disasters, relieve people from the troubles of water and fire, and protect the populace from natural disasters. As the embodiment of Xuwu, Zhenwu Dadi is seen as a symbol of the interaction between Yin and Yang. Zhenwu Dadi is also closely related to concepts such as lifespan and life and death, and is considered the deity in charge of human lifespan and destiny. By worshiping Zhenwu Dadi, one can pray for longevity, the removal of disasters and difficulties, and obtain the blessings and grace of the deity. According to Taoist scriptures, Zhenwu Dadi was originally the prince of Jingle Kingdom, born with divine spirit and the ability to perceive subtleties and divine will. He abandoned the throne and chose to cultivate himself on Wudang Mountain for forty-two years, achieving enlightenment and ultimate mastery, and was eventually titled 'Dangmo Tianzun'. He leads thirty-six heavenly generals and five hundred protective spirit officials, patrolling the three realms, investigating all directions, saving people with a sword, and subduing demons and evil spirits. He has appeared in times of crisis to help and save people from distress. He has also incarnated in the human world to punish evil and promote righteousness.
