Chinese New Year 2026 at Ang Mo Kio Central. Scenes of Daily life. New HDB blocks. Today is 5 days before Chinese New Year 2026 on 17 February 2026. I decided to visit Ang Mo Kio Central and observed the human traffic, festive stalls, food bazaar and decors, to get the feel of HDB heartland vibes of the common people. I also visited the new HDB blocks coming up on the former portion of carpark near Courts. One of the oldest housing estates in Singapore built in the 70s, Ang Mo Kio was a pioneer in many ways. For example, it was one of the first to have a communal space in the form of a town centre with F&B, shopping and retail outlets for the residents in the community. Till today, the origin of the name "Ang Mo Kio" remains a mystery - some say it comes from the Hokkien term for tomatoes, while others believe it was named after a red-haired Caucasian or a bridge. Ang Mo Kio (AMK) means "red-haired man's bridge" in Hokkien, named after a bridge over the Kallang River built by British surveyor John Turnbull Thomson in the 19th century, as "Ang Mo" (red-haired) was a local term for Caucasians. Another theory suggests it referred to concrete bridges ('ang-mô͘-kiô'/'concrete bridge'), while another says it was named for red tomatoes ('ang-mô͘'), but the Thomson bridge story is most widely accepted.
