One Room Rental HDB flat. Block 33. Something unexpected on the 4th floor. Drowning baby bird. At the request of an old friend, I am doing this episode focusing on the Homes of the Poor in Singapore after 2 episodes focusing on the Homes of the Super Rich. Even richest country has poor people but it’s usually unseen, hidden away from public. Many people confused a rich country consist of all rich people. But 60% of the population are average, 35% poor and 5% super rich, according to my estimates. There are 55 billionaires in Singapore. I am sure NOT one of them. There are over 344,000 millionaires in Singapore. I can be one of them if 100,000 people signed up as my members and pay S$10 per month membership fee. 20% of Singaporeans owned 80% of the wealth, averaging S$5.43 million each with S$3.42 million in assets, the rest liquid. Singapore is one of the TOP richest nation on the planet and also the Most Expensive. Let’s get back to 1 room rental flats. There are 68 HDB 1 Room Flats for Rent in Singapore. Today I am visiting one of the oldest 1 room rental HDB flats in Singapore, with two units facing each other and a common corridor. The rent varies according to your monthly household income, flat type, and whether you are a first or second-timer applicant. Monthly rental payable are based upon household income, first timer $800 or less- 1 room $26-$33, 2 room $44-$75, 2nd timer $90-$123, 2 rooms $123-$165. Between $801-$1,500 income - first timer 1 room $90-$123, 2 rooms - $123-$165, second timer 1 room $150-205, 2 rooms $205-$275. These 1 room rental flats typical consist of a main hall inclusive an area just enough to place a single size bed and a small cabinet, plus a kitchen and combined WC/bath toilet. The block which I visited today consists of 12 story, right in HDB heartland but now surrounded by Condos and newer build high rise HDBs. The blocks are much cleaner and less congested than I imagined. During my visit and filming, I only managed to bumped into 2 persons during the entire shoot and 12 story climb upstairs. One man was not wearing his shirt while the other man, both past 60s I guessed, waved me on when I was blocking his way. This block is located just besides the Boon Keng MRT station, shopping arcade and hawker centre. For this kind of rental, it’s very convenience and cost effective. HDB is public housing that foreigners cannot purchase. It has no facilities such as swimming pool and security but contained within are all the basics needed for accommodation. hall, rooms, kitchen and toilet. HDB is one of the most successful programs for public housing and deserved being mentioned by allowing normal people to own their flat outright as an owner for 99 years lease, value ZERO after the lease. Over the last 20 years, prices have been escalating higher and higher in line with population growth from 3.1 million to present 6.1 million. Singapore can accommodate up to 10 million people like sardines but we welcome the very wealthy and those who intend to work till 69. Thank you for watching. To Join as a Member.
