This rendition of Der Tannenbaum was sung in German by Alma Gluck and Paul Reimers under the Victor Recording label. This soprano and tenor duet features and orchestra that was conducted by Walter B. Rogers. Contrary to popular belief, Der Tannenbaum does not translate directly to O Christmas Tree, but instead to a pine or fir tree. The earliest roots of this song (no pun intended) go back to the mid 1500’s with the modern 1824 lyrics being attributed to Ernst Gebhard Salomon Anschütz (1780 to 1861). As far as I have been able to research, this particular rendition was the second take and was recorded on 04/29/1915 in Camden, NJ. The recording catalog # is 87229. The recording matrix number was B-15968. The reverse side is blank. This record cost $2 in 1915, which would inflate to about $51 dollars in 2019/2020. The gramophone this is being played on is a H.M.V C102B. I believe that it is from the 1933-1935 era due to the fact that it has the wooden motor board, metal needle container, and the No. 16 sound-box. This portable suitcase model needs restoration, as there are some cosmetic issues, missing parts, and the auto-brake does not function. Overall, I believe that it sounds good for being almost 90 years old. You can hear the tinny sound-box at times during the peaks (I hear that the 5a soundbox is better). I also need newer needles and a better microphone, as there are times that this maxed out. I don't have the equipment at the moment and wanted to get these videos up before the holiday is past! No copyright infringement is intended. I own NOTHING besides the physical records and gramophone. I am not making money off of this. If anything, I lost time that could have been spent watching The Mandalorian with my dog on the couch. This is classic music that needs to be enjoyed and not forgotten!
