How does nurturing financial savvy at the margins of society help build resilience not only to economic shocks but to changing landscapes and environments? Join our panellists Shoki Mafogo, Esther Engelbrecht, Darlington Sibanda and Zak Essa on the 27th Tipping Points webinar as they discuss how savings groups stimulate entrepreneurship and how they promote a green economy by embracing agroecology and nature conservation. Rešoketšwe ‘Shoki’ Mafogo, was born and bred in the Kruger to Canyons (K2C) landscape. With a BA in Humanities and a special heart for development, Shoki finds the human factor in any circumstance equipping her for her work with traditional authorities and diverse project partners. Sibanda is an interdisciplinary researcher on development, climate change and poverty based at the African Climate and Development Initiative, University of Cape Town. His research focuses on how climate actions can be socially transformative, specifically through addressing synergies and trade-offs between development, climate action, poverty and inequality. Engelbrecht is a multifaceted activist with extensive experience in community development across various sectors, including small-scale mining, eco-tourism, climate change, and microfinancing in Namaqualand. Essa is an analyst supporting the Presidential Employment Stimulus and a researcher in Environmental Policy and Development. His work focuses on how public employment can build livelihood pathways out of poverty and its role in responding to climate change and environmental challenges. The webinar will be facilitated by Martha Stein Sochas, an advisor to SaveAct microfinancing NGO, following her retirement from the Agence Francaise de Développement (AFD). Prior to her retirement she was the Director for human resources after spending four years as the Regional Director for Southern Africa. About Tipping Points Guided by Oppenheimer Generations Research and Conservation’s approach of asking the questions that matter, this solutions-based webinar series explores how we can step back from environmental tipping points and foster a sustainable future for both Africa’s people and nature. Every month thought leaders, disruptors, and researchers gather to address key questions for Africa’s future through an exploration of African environmental research, conservation, sustainability, and development. Complex challenges have no quick fixes. Inclusive conversation that shares perspectives, uplifts African narratives, challenges conservation paradigms, and interrogates possible paths of action is critical in navigating complicated, interconnected issues.
