The ocean is crucial to life on Earth, producing around half of the oxygen we breathe, regulating the climate, and powering the water cycle. It supports rich biodiversity and provides food, jobs, and trade for billions of people worldwide. As a major carbon sink, the ocean also helps reduce the impacts of climate change. However, it has been severely damaged by human activities such as overfishing, pollution, coastal development, and greenhouse gas emissions. Encouragingly, momentum for ocean conservation is growing, and the ocean has a unique ability to recover when protected. June’s Tipping Points webinar draws on insights from this year's UN Oceans Conference and bring together marine experts to discuss conservation progress, remaining challenges, and Africa’s role in global ocean protection efforts. The webinar panellists are Autone Mululuma (High Seas Alliance Youth Ambassador), Olusola Adeoye (Founder, Coast2DeepSea Initiative) and Zandile Ndhlovu (Ocean conservationist, social activist, and filmmaker). The webinar is facilitated by Kendyl Wright, marine scientist at WILDOCEANS. Zandile Ndhlovu is a South African ocean conservationist, social activist, and filmmaker who is the first black female certified freediving instructor from South Africa. She is the founder of The Black Mermaid Foundation, an organisation focused on fostering diversity, access, and education in the ocean arena. In November 2023, Ndhlovu was named as one of the BBC's 100 Women. Autone Mululuma is a passionate Climate Justice Advocate and High Seas Youth Ambassador with EarthEcho International. He is leading a campaign to promote ocean biodiversity protection and support Zambia’s ratification of the High Seas Treaty. Mululuma is studying Environmental and Natural Resources Management at the University of Zambia. Trained in grassroots advocacy by ActionAid Zambia, he works with youth to develop community-driven climate resilience solutions. Olusola Adeoye is a Nigerian ocean conservationist and environmental advocate focused on sustainable marine practices. He leads the Coast2Deep-Sea Initiative, a citizen science project that engages youth from Lagos’ fishing communities in habitat mapping and biodiversity research. Adeoye also heads the Coast and Ocean Programme at Nature Cares Resource Centre, where he promotes conservation and sustainable fishing. His work bridges local knowledge and international collaboration to build Africa’s blue economy from coast to deep sea. Kendyl Wright is a marine biologist and Marine Protected Area Scientist at WILDOCEANS, part of the WILDTRUST. With a PhD in Benthic Ecology, she has worked across both private and NGO sectors, transitioning from coastal ecology to marine policy and planning. Her current work spans South Africa and the Western Indian Ocean, focusing on Marine Protected Area development. Wright is a passionate advocate for inclusive ocean conservation, especially involving small-scale fishers and local communities.
