Abstract: Tagu Jams Live Recording Session

We’ve been taking a break after the last jam session with Lin Pyae. September brought heavy rains and severe flooding across the whole country. Our collective attention needed to be there. So we paused. A moment of silence as our nation recovers from yet another disaster. Now we’re back. And we brought Abstract -- ‪@abstractband3318‬ -- a band that bangs out funky tunes in our little office back in July 2024. Zin Maung Thant, who has now moved away, played bass and mixed their songs when they started out. Kyaw Gye plays the electric guitar and Htet Paing is the frontman. They became friends growing up in Yankin: their schools were close to each other. They started making music at Zin’s house around 2016. They made traditional rock songs in their early days but slowly shifted toward funk rock. It’s a treat to have Abstract performed at Tagu Jams because we don’t really see them play live in Yangon like other underground bands. Their upbeat rock and funk infused music also brought a different vibe to our recording room which was also set up with bright colors to match the music. Their performance had so much energy. Their songs made us bob our heads and move our bodies. In songs like Funk About You and Min Pae Min Pae, you can hear the familiar love/heartbreak stories but the events are set within a crumbling city/country. With their main member Zin Maung Thant away, Kyaw Gye had to bring in reinforcements for this live recording session: Htet Lu on the drums, Aung Kant playing keyboard and Hta Gye as the bassist. One of the songs they performed here – Robot City – will feature in an upcoming group album. That would probably give you a different taste as well. Right now, Kyaw Gye is still making a living playing guitar but Htet Paing is venturing into films, working in the sound department.
