How to Draw a Galaxy Step by Step Tutorial | Prismacolor Pencils | Strathmore Toned Tan (2018)

Hey Guys, today I'm going to be walking you through how to draw a galaxy step by step using Prismacolor pencils on Strathmore toned tan paper. In this tutorial I will cover every step in detail and in real time, I've only time-lapsed short parts for watch-ability but other than that it is real time so you can follow along and use all the same materials or any others you choose. The material used in this tutorial are: 8 shades of Prismacolor pencils: PC938 - White PC994 - Process Red PC1009 - Dahlia Purple PC931 - Dark Purple PC932 - Violet PC208 - Indanthrone Blue PC132 - Dioxazine Purple Hue PC935 - Black Strathmore Toned Tan paper White Gelly Roll pen If you are following along with me then please create a box in the center of your paper, mine was 6 x 6 cm. Feel free also to use a character or any other shape - the same principles apply. The first step in this galaxy tutorial is to take our white and create a zigzagging line with a few spheres on their own. For this whole process you should use firm pressure and a small circular motion. Now we create a border around the white with our light tone (process red) using the same pressure and motion, you can overlap the white slightly and try not to make it too uniform, it's better to be more random. Next we take our mid tone (dahlia purple) and do the same thing again but creating a border outside of the light tone. same pressure and motion again. The next step is where the magic happens, get your white pencil and using firm pressure and circular motion, blend from the white across both light and mid tones. You should be able to feel the colours pull and move around eventually blending together. I like to leave a border on the very edge where I don't blend the mid tone so it creates an extra effect. Do this for the whole white area including spheres. Now we can begin to add the darker areas, using Violet + Dark Purple we are going to go around some of the edges of the area we have already blended. The tip for this point is to create patterns but leaving gaps in-between for some other shades to give the galaxy depth. Go back to your Dahlia purple and mix it in with the dark purple and violet as well. Next get your black and choose the area that is going to be the darkest point, it needs to be reasonably far away from the lightest point (the blended whites) so we have room to blend all the way from light to dark. Using Indanthrone blue go around the edge of the black areas and start to blend this blue with the black Now go back through the original colours - Violet, Dahlia Purple, Dark Purple and Indanthrone Blue to fill in the gaps, use your judgement to match colours. Use Dioxazine Purple Hue to fill in some of the gaps also, this is another tone of dark blue that will give extra depth and variation. Use the lighter tones like Violet to blend colours together. If you can see any obvious contrasts between colours try to mix them with a lighter tone and firm pressure. Finally we can go back to our white and use light pressure over some of the lighter areas to get a smooth transition. The final step is to use a white gel pen to paint the stars onto your galaxy. I like to use lots of varying sizes of small dots to achieve the effect that I like. You can add actual stars in as well if you like depending on the look you are trying to achieve. I try to keep them all round as I prefer that, if you have any that are more like shooting stars I think it gives more of a cartoony type look to it. And then you are finished! In my normal drawings I would go back over the linework with a black fine liner (usually 0..5) as prismacolor lays ontop of it and blurs it out.
