There is nothing like the buzz of singing in front of an audience, be that a crowd of thousands or even just friends and family. It's the ultimate rush. Though of course, as we are our instrument, it is also an incredibly personal thing to do and so of course we are going to be incredibly nervous. And it's not just us, even the seasoned professionals get very nervous. Because nerves are GOOD. They are a sign that we care about what we are doing so we shouldn't see them as a bad thing. By doing a few nerve specification exercises we can calm ourselves and then that nervous energy can be harnessed for our performance. And then we can let go and just enjoy it! In this video I start by chatting through what needs to be done in the weeks leading up to the gig, cos gig prep is so much more than just a quick warm up 20mins before going on stage. We then start our routine with a mindfulness exercise to calm our nerves. This is also something that can soothe anxiety and generally make us more present, fantastic for maintaining good mental health. Then our routine as always has some breathing exercises before we do a few sirens to smoothe our passaggio. Our SOVT (semi-occluded vocal tract) exercise are lip bubble arpeggios, firstly legato and then staccato to strengthen our powerhouse support. Next we do some lovely thirds, fourths and fifths interval slides opening from MMM to AHH before we do some octave arpeggios to a DAH vowel. Then we do some descending octave arpeggios to w WAH vowel before we build with the 1,121,12321... exercise. Finally we sing the tongue twister THE TIP OF THE TONGUE ON THE TEETH AND THE LIPS descending down a C major scale before some mindful breathing to re-centre ourselves. I give a little more chat for those final moments before stage and then you're good to go! New videos come every week so let me know in the comments what you'd like to hear about (Technique? Song breakdowns? Singer analysis?) We're a democracy at MusicForMy... so you get to chose! MusicForMy...VOICE is the best online singing club for growing your voice without the hefty price tag.
