Mom Hobby has her work cut out for her in trying how to feed her chicks from the nest rails. This was one feeding of several today which was the most successful and at least one chick got several bites of food beginning at 07:23. The youngest did not cry out for food so I do not think got anything to eat in this feeding. But Mom did have her back to the cam so it is possible it got a few bites. This is a new nest this year but the same design as last season. Last season the bottom of the nest had more wood shavings which elevated it so was not such a reach as it is this year. Keep in mind this is a new female mate for the male hobby and she may be a first time Mom. If so, there is a trial and error learning curve that takes place especially in these first few days of feedings. So far each day is getting better as she tackles this role of feeding her chicks. The Eurasian Hobby doesn't build its own nest. Instead, it most often uses the old nests built by other birds, such as crows or ravens, placed high in a tall tree, or occasionally on an electricity pylon, or cliff ledge. They will also utilize man-made nests. The female is responsible for doing most of the incubation/brooding. While she is busy caring for her eggs, the male is busy bringing food to her and, after the nestlings hatch, to the young. Thank you for watching! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Egg 1 laid 2nd June 6:47 pm Egg 2 laid 5th June 6:46 am (60 hours) Egg 3 laid 7th June 8:04 pm (61.25 hours) Chick #1 hatched July 7th 2024 Chick #2 hatched July 8th 2024 "This is the 3rd year we have been fortunate to set up this camera and the 4th year that we know hobbies have used this location to nest. The adult male is the same male (he is ringed) but we think the female is a new bird as she doesn’t have the aberrant white feather on her head which has been present in previous years. We still don’t have a full ring number for the male but are fairly certain he was ringed as a chick by us in 2019 approx. 10km away. " Thank you for watching!
