Spent some time watching the Tacoma Link (T Line) running through downtown Tacoma today. If you’ve never railfanned light rail up close, it’s a totally different vibe from heavy rail like Sounder or Amtrak — but still awesome. I focused on the right rail as the train approached. You can actually hear the soft humming sound of the wheels on steel before the car fully comes into view. The rail starts vibrating slightly, especially near curves and street crossings. When the T Line car rolled in, you could see the wheel flange riding perfectly along the inside edge of the right rail. On street-running sections, the rail is embedded in the pavement, so it’s cool watching how tight and precise everything is. Details I captured: 🔩 Rail joints and fasteners holding the track in place ⚡ Overhead catenary wire powering the car 🚦 Street signals interacting with the train movement 🛤 The polished shine on the right rail from constant wheel contact As the train passed, the sound changed from a hum to that smooth rolling metal sound. No loud horn like mainline trains — just the bell and that electric traction noise. After it cleared, you could still hear the slight echo between the buildings downtown. Street-running rail is underrated for railfanning. Tacoma Link might be smaller than BNSF mainline action, but it’s still real rail movement — just urban style. 🚊🔥
