The History: Also known as the Snowshed Double 1, this lift has quite an interesting history. Snowshed 1 was originally installed in 1961 by Poma. It was the first lift to service the Snowshed beginner area until 2 years later when the Snowshed Double 2 was built. In 1966 another Poma double was installed to provide even more capacity to the slope. This turned out to be a very inefficient lift system as it equated to high maintenance costs and 3x the staffing needed to run the lifts. By 1987, it was clear that having 3 aging Poma doubles as their main lifts was inefficient. In 1987 Killington replaced the Snowshed Double 3 with a new Yan detachable quad dubbed the Snowshed Express. Along with the replacement of Snowshed 3, Killington chose to have Yan make extensive modifications to Snowshed 1 & 2 to provide reliable backups to the new detachable lift. Yan replaced the chairs, drive terminals, and returns. Yan also replaced one tower on each lift close to the top. Over the years, it was realized that the Snowshed Express could handle most, if not all of the traffic on the Snowshed slope. Because of this, Snowshed 2 was removed in 2015 leaving Snowshed 1 as the only backup to the Snowshed Express. The drive and return terminals of 2 still remain though. Snowshed 1 only operates during peak times such as MLK Weekend and President's Weekend. On the day this was filmed, the lift had about a 5-minute line. With all the slows and stops that this lift has to make for beginners, it's easy to see why most skiers opt to ride the Snowshed Express. I suspect that when the Snowshed Express is replaced, this lift will be scrapped. The Lift: Snowshed 1 uses a Yan drive that is a somewhat uncommon model. This drive is built for tandem a tandem lift, but since 2015, only one side has been used. All the towers except for one are original Poma towers from the 1960s. The sheaves are also original on these towers. The bottom drive uses hydraulic tensioning while the top return is fixed. The chairs are Yan's second-generation double chairs also found on Mount Snow's Beartrap Double. Chair spacing is close so capacity is 1,200 p/h, although it is most likely lower as it runs slower than its design speed of 450 ft/min. Specifications: Design Speed - 450 ft/min Normal Operating Speed ~ 375-400 ft/min Design Capacity - 1,200 p/h Drive - Bottom Return - Top Tensioning - Bottom (hydraulic)
