Blessed Assurance - WOV 699 Text: Fanny J. Crosby (1820-1915); Music: Phoebe P. Knapp (1830-1908) With One Voice, 1995 This popular hymn is the result of the collaboration of two women. In the early 1870s, Fanny Crosby went to visit her friend, Phoebe Knapp, to see the progress on the new pipe organ she was having installed in her apartment. Mrs. Knapp sat at the piano to play a new tune she had composed, and Mrs. Crosby was inspired to write theo lyrics, "Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine..." Fanny Crosby became blind shortly after she was born, but she wrote more than 8,000 hymns and gospel songs during her lifetime. She was also a poet and a mission worker (based in New York City) for immigrants and the urban poor. Phoebe Knapp was an organist and composer, and went to church with Mrs. Crosby in NYC. She wrote over 500 hymn tunes and was married to the second president of the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. After he passed away she gave most of their money away to charity. Lyrics: Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine! Oh, what a foretaste of glory divine! Heir of salvation, purchase of God, born of his Spirit, washed in his blood. Refrain: This is my story, this is my song, praising my Savior all the day long: this is my story, this is my song, praising my Savior all the day long. Perfect submission, perfect delight, visions of rapture now burst on my sight; angels descending bring from above echoes of mercy, whispers of love. Refrain Perfect submission, all is at rest; I in my Savior am happy and blest, watching and waiting, looking above, filled with his goodness, lost in his love. Refrain Performed by Matthew Ganong, Jason Antley, and Bailey Slice Parker CCLI License # 2440064
