Baptized in Water - ELW 693 Text: Michael Saward (1932-2015); Music: Gaelic tune, arr. B. Wayne Bisbee (b. 1934) With One Voice, 1995 The three verses of this hymn give a succinct description of the New Testament understanding of holy baptism. In baptism, we are: 1 - cleansed by the blood of Christ and made heirs of Salvation 2 - dead in the tomb with Christ and rising with him, forgiven of our sins 3 - marked with the sign of Christ and known as God's children It was written by Michael Saward, a London based Anglican priest, author, and composer. The tune is a Scottish folk melody, first associated with a Christmas carol called, "Child in the Manger." It is also used for the hymn, "Morning Has Broken." Lyrics: Baptized in water, sealed by the Spirit, cleansed by the blood of Christ our king: heirs of salvation, trusting his promise, faithfully now God's praise we sing. Baptized in water, sealed by the Spirit, dead in the tomb with Christ our king: one with the rising, freed and forgiven, thankfully now God's praise we sing. Baptized in water, sealed by the Spirit, marked with the sign of Christ our King: born if the Spirit, we are God's children; joyfully now God's praise we sing.
