The song that was almost cut from The Wizard of Oz - not once, but twice. If one producer hadn't fought to keep it, the world might never have heard the number one song of the twentieth century. Here's my acoustic fingerpicking take on "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." TIMESTAMPS: 0:00 - The Story Behind the Song 1:45 - Somewhere Over the Rainbow THE STORY: Harold Arlen wrote the melody for "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" in 1938, sitting in his car outside Schwab's Drug Store in Hollywood. The entire melody came to him fully formed - including that famous opening octave leap from C to C that has become one of the most recognizable intervals in all of popular music. His lyricist E.Y. "Yip" Harburg crafted words about a land where troubles melt like lemon drops, and together they created something timeless. MGM executives tried to cut the song from The Wizard of Oz twice - they thought it was too slow and too sophisticated for a children's film. Producer Arthur Freed fought to keep it in, and thank God he did. Judy Garland was just sixteen years old when she recorded it, and it became her signature song for the rest of her life. It won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1939. In 1993, Hawaiian musician Israel Kamakawiwo'ole recorded a ukulele medley of "Over the Rainbow" and "What a Wonderful World" in a single take at three in the morning. That recording has now surpassed one billion views on YouTube, proving that a great song can be completely reimagined and still move people to tears. In 2001, the Recording Industry Association of America and the National Endowment for the Arts named "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" the number one song of the twentieth century. MUSICAL NOTES: Key: C major (standard tuning, no capo) Tempo: ~80 BPM (gentle, unhurried) Style: Fingerpicking arpeggios with warm, dreamy quality Signature Elements: Iconic opening octave leap, lush arpeggiated voicings, smooth voice-leading PERFORMANCE TIPS: The opening octave leap is everything - give it space and let it ring Keep fingerpicking arpeggios flowing and even, like the song is drifting on air Use dynamics to tell the story - pull back on verses, swell on the bridge At 77, this song hits different - let that lived experience come through in every note If you enjoy acoustic guitar covers of timeless classics, please subscribe and hit the bell!
