A playthrough of Microleague's 1989 text-based wrestling game for PCs running Dos, Micro League Wrestling. Played through with both disks: the first match shows Hulk Hogan vs Ted DiBiase. I am controlling DiBiase. The second match, beginning at 13:10, shows Hulk vs Macho Man Randy Savage, and I am controlling Randy Savage in this match. . Even only running at a couple frames a second, this game is frickin' sweet! Not only is it the first ever officially licensed WWF game (beating out even the ancient NES game), but it also plays like an old-skool PC adventure, with an interface that is surprisingly similar to Princess Tomato in the Salad Kingdom :) You wear down your opponent with moves of varying strength, and the general idea is to wear down your opponent with weaker moves before you try the bigger ones. This doesn't always hold, though, and you can really gain the upper hand by taking chances when your opponent least expects it. It also allows you to call in backup to interfere (Savage calls in Sensational/Scary Sherri Martel, and DiBiase calls his manservant/bodyguard Virgil), but if you aren't careful and the ref sees them in the act, you'll be automatically disqualified. It's a cool concept, and it works fairly well given how limited the hardware was to run it (I'm thinking we were probably better off not getting a console-style wrestling game if it had to be light enough to run on an 8088!). I love the game, but it does require a bit of patience to get along with its slow pace. The graphics are pretty good for an EGA game using photos, and even though it doesn't support any sound cards, it does pull off some pretty good effects through the internal PC speaker. I was also a big fan of the commentary by real-life personalities, though I found myself laughing over how young Vince McMahon looks here! You also get Mean Gene doing pre-match interviews, Howard Finkel doing ring introductions, and Jesse Ventura (as shown here) or Bruno Sammartino joining Vince at ringside to provide color commentary. Any fan of pro wrestling should check this out if they haven't seen it before - being the first officially licensed WWF game is a pretty cool title to hold. ______ No cheats were used during the recording of this video.
