Today's road tour takes a look at the A709 road, a primarily rural country road connecting Dumfries with Lockerbie, via Torthorwald and Lochmaben in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. The road begins near the center of Dumfries on English Street, and bears left next to St Mary's Church. This section of the road also serves Dumfries Railway Station, and navigates a couple of small roundabouts on this narrow town stretch of road. Passing Peel Center, the road speeds up on approach to Brownrigg Roundabout where the A75 crosses over. From here, generally straight stretches with a few moderate bends populate the route, passing through the small village of Torthorwald, through Ryemuir Wood, and arriving in Lochmaben where the road narrows to single file through the old village. Turning right onto the main street, we then pass Castle Loch and just three more miles onwards to Lockerbie, passing over the A74(M) and quickly ending at the High Street, the only A-road to serve the town since the upgrade of the A74 in the 1990s.
