2021 Chevy Tahoe: TEST DRIVE Review - Better than the Ford Expedition?

Chevy’s full-size Tahoe SUV has been the benchmark of the segment since it was first introduced back in 1995. So when it came time for Chevy to roll out an all-new fifth-generation for 2021, you can be sure they took the task seriously. Especially when Ford’s Expedition has been grabbing market share since a new generation was introduced for 2018. This new Tahoe rides on an all-new platform that uses an independent rear suspension. That may not sound sexy but its impact is significant. Cargo space behind the third row of seats jumps by 10 cubic feet and overall cargo space is up by 30 cubic feet. That’s a lot. Even better is that legroom for the second row grows by three inches and for the third row, ten inches. That’s huge. Literally. And it means that people over six feet tall can sit in all three rows of seats -- at the same time -- for long roadtrips. So start packing. Also helping those dimensions is the fact that the new Tahoe’s wheelbase is about five inches longer and the overall length grows by a little under seven inches. Chevy also made some improvements to the powertrain. The 5.3-liter, 355-horsepower V8 and the optional 420-horsepower 6.2-liter V8 carry over from the previous Tahoe; now the larger engine is standard on Chevy’s new High Country trim level. Helping boost fuel economy is a standard ten-speed automatic transmission that’s bolted to either V8 on all trims. For the first time on the Tahoe, Chevy will also offer a 3.0-liter turbodiesel six-cylinder engine; it makes 277 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. Rear-wheel-drive is standard on all Tahoes except for the four-wheel-drive only Z71; on all other models 4WD is a $3,000 option. Inside the Tahoe, Chevy did away with the old-school column shifter that’s been around forever. They replaced it with electronic buttons mounted to the dashboard. Next to them sits a standard 10-inch infotainment screen, that offers wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity on all but the base LS Tahoe. There’s also wireless phone charging, WiFi connectivity, numerous USB ports for all rows of seats, and trick options like the biggest head-up display we’ve ever used (15 inches) -- and one that’s also the best. Another option is a rear-seat entertainment system that lets users watch the same or different content on the two screens; they can also use the vehicle’s navigation system to find a new destination and send it to the main screen upfront for the front passengers to accept or reject. Lower-end models use a bench seat in the middle row; higher-end trims like the loaded High Country that we tested here, come with a pair of captains chairs in the second row, making ours a seven-seater. Standard safety equipment includes pre-collision alert, automatic pedestrian braking, rear park assist, and automatic emergency braking. Other active safety tech, like adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, and blind-spot monitoring are either optional or not even offered on some lower trim levels, which is disappointing on an SUV that can top $80,000. Otherwise, the new 2021 Tahoe is impressive and is certainly a worthy competitor to Ford’s Expedition. So which would we choose? Check out the video to find out.
