Gabapentin was designed to treat seizures and nerve pain. So why are reports emerging of people crushing and snorting it in search of a stronger effect? Approved by the FDA in the 1990s, gabapentin is commonly prescribed for epilepsy, neuropathic pain, and sometimes off-label for anxiety or other conditions. While it is not classified federally as a controlled substance in most states, growing evidence shows it can be misused, particularly alongside opioids. Some users report that altering the route of administration intensifies sedation or enhances the effects of other drugs, increasing the risk of respiratory depression and overdose when combined. Several states have since reclassified gabapentin due to rising concerns about diversion and nonmedical use.
