Las Terrenas is a resort town on the Samaná Peninsula, in the northeastern part of the Dominican Republic. It's known for central Las Terrenas Beach. Other beaches include Bonita, Cosón and Las Ballenas. Cays off the coast feature underwater caverns like Dudu cave. Bars and restaurants, many with open-air seating, fresh fruits stands and colorful vibrant people. We absolutely love this place and after visiting it for the first time in 2018, we come back every year. Let us take you for a 52 minute walk along its most beautiful beach: Las Terrenas beach to Playa Portillo. This white sand beach runs along the town’s center, tucked between Playa Punta Popy and Playa Las Ballenas–in essence, a portion of the same five kilometer (eight miles) stretch welcoming those arriving into the dream beach town of Las Terrenas. You’ll notice fishermen’s canoes in some parts, as well as a handful of beachfront bars, hotels, and a boardwalk for those who want to hike along the beach without touching the water. The beach eventually connects to Pueblo de Los Pescadores on the west and the wide, swimming favorite Playa Las Ballenas. Lined with resorts and villas, Playa Portillo begins at the entrance of Las Terrenas town, stretching all the way east as the first part of the whopping five kilometer (eight mile) long coastline. Playa Portillo’s soft white sand boasts a coral reef close enough to swim to, and offers easy snorkeling opportunities. The beach is enjoyed for the most part by resort guests and is set farther apart from town than the rest. From here, the stretch continues with varying names and characteristics along the way–as Punta Popy, Las Ballenas, Playa Bonita, and Playa Cosón.
