Style: Bossa Nova Form: A-B (16 Bars) [8-8] The head is typically played twice on the way in and out. Intro: A 10 bar intro can be heard on the original recording from Page One, this is sometimes included in performances. Shout-Chorus: The original recording also features a shout-chorus that takes place during the A sections towards the end of the solos, however this is rarely included in performances. Key: C Major Harmony/Overview: The harmony of this composition is very functional, as it is centered mainly around II - V's. The song begins on Ami7 for the first 4 bars before moving up a minor 3rd to Cm7. The melody lands on the 13th of both chords, implying the Dorian mode. The B section begins on BbMaj7 and continues to cycle II - V's down in whole-steps before ultimately arriving at FMaj7. Recordings: This song has been recorded over 75 times to date. Joe Henderson first composed it when he was only 15 years old, although it was first introduced it on his 1963 debut album Page One. The tune would remain in his repertoire well throughout his career, and he would perform and record it as both a leader and sideman on various albums such as Joe Henderson Live at the Light House, New York Reunion, and Big Band to name a few. It has remained as a staple in the repertoire ever since, and continues to be immensely popular among students as well as in jam session situations.
