In "Hope in Waiting", Luke 1:5–25 invites us into the first light of Advent by showing that God often begins His greatest work in the darkest seasons. After tracing the Old Testament shadows in Before the Manger, we now enter The Dawn of Redemption, stepping into a world silenced for 400 years and aching for God to speak again. Into that silence, Luke introduces Zechariah and Elizabeth—faithful yet barren—reminding us that Advent begins in longing, not celebration. God breaks the silence in His time, not ours, and His answer is often bigger than our request, giving Zechariah not just a son but the forerunner of the Messiah. Yet even when hope arrives, faith is still required, as seen in Zechariah’s struggle between belief and unbelief. And in the quiet conception of John, we see that God’s promises may begin softly, but they always come to pass. Luke’s opening chapter is the first crack of dawn after centuries of night, announcing that the silence is breaking, the promise is breathing, and the dawn of redemption has begun.
