My Philodendron Carmel Marble housed a small colony of ants. Ants do not directly harm plants, but they cause indirect damage by protecting or farming other pests like aphids, scale, and mealybugs that produce sugary honeydew secretions that the ants will eat. The result is weakened plants, yellowing leaves, stunted growth, and mold from excess honeydew. If you don’t see other pests, ants are likely not harming your plants, but they’re really annoying. To safely manage ants and other pests in your houseplants, you can.. 1. Apply diatomaceous earth around soil and leaves 2. Apply insecticidal soap to the leaves every few days until the pests are gone. 3. Repot if the infestation is bad. I did all three of these things because my plant needed to be repotted anyway.
