At Silverstone we delivered excellence. Our people planned, tested, designed, innovated, challenged and came together. Smart technology and supply chain excellence provided a platform for inspired performance of ground-breaking UK construction. The exceptional surface at Silverstone was achieved using all our technology, when required, at every stage of its construction. The milling was undertaken to a 3D model that had been created by the track designer to accommodate a 70mm two-layer construction. The 'X/Y' coordinates were fixed with GPS, but the depth of cut 'Z' was uploaded to the planer using the 'smooth-ride' system. The existing track was milled to depths of up to 140mm to fix the new profile that would remove water issues and improve profile following completion of the surfacing. The track was milled to within 2.5mm of the design milled profile. This enabled the surfacing to be placed at nominal depths to give the best results for the finished quality. Transfer vehicles, echelon paving and averaging beams were all used to give the best possible results to the overall smoothness of the surface. A full and detailed paving plan was developed that took account of widths and crowns within the track and allowed for daily paver configuration. Compaction was undertaken with oscillating rollers to assist with the 'knitted' finish requested by the designer. A bespoke rolling pattern was developed to ensure all linear joints were compacted with priority. Due to the accuracy of the milled surface, and the paving train adopting all of the technology available, Tarmac were able to achieve the surface regularity required and produce a surface with an IRI of 0.26. #road #racing #track
