Title: An Introduction to Power System Modeling and Optimisation Abstract: Optimisation technology is tightly integrated into the design and operation of modern power systems. However, the physical laws governing the behavior of power flows yield challenging Mixed Integer Non-Linear Programing (MINLP) problems. This talk will review the physical laws behind power systems and discus techniques for solving these optimization problems in practice. It will conclude with some new power system modeling techniques developed at NICTA. Bio: Carleton completed a Ph.D. in Computer Science at Brown University in 2012 under the supervision of Pascal Van Hentenryck. His thesis investigated hybridizing optimization technologies for use in Disaster Management with a focus on Power System Restoration. Carleton is extending his thesis work as a staff researcher in NICTA's Optimasation Research Group where he works in the Energy Systems and Disaster Management initiatives.
