Sea turtles 101: Sea turtle species, facts, life cycle, threats, and how you can help. Learn all about sea turtles in our latest episode of Sea Turtles: Deep Dive, sponsored by Seiko Prospex. Timestamps: 00:00 Introduction 00:18 Sea Turtle Species 00:40 Sea Turtle Life Cycle 01:48 Threats to Sea Turtles 02:21 Hope for Sea Turtles Sea turtles have roamed the oceans for more than 100 million years. Today, seven sea turtle species swim our seas: Green, loggerhead, flatback, Kemp’s ridley, olive ridley, hawksbill, and the leatherback, set apart by its large size and leathery shell. Sea Turtle Life Cycle: Life begins on warm beaches. Females lay eggs in the sand, and after 45 to 65 days, hatchlings emerge, dash for the sea, and swim furiously to offshore currents. There, floating habitats provide food and shelter while they grow. With many predators, only a few survive these early years. As they mature, many turtles return to nearshore habitats, like coral reefs, mangroves, and seagrass meadows, where they help keep ecosystems healthy. They spend up to twenty years in these food-rich waters before reaching adulthood. Then, guided by Earth’s magnetic field, they navigate back to the coasts where they were born, sometimes thousands of miles away. After mating, females lay multiple clutches of eggs on or near the very beach from which they hatched. Sea turtle nests deliver a massive pulse of nutrients–like carbon and nitrogen–fueling the health of beaches and dunes. And the cycle of life continues. Threats & Conservation: Despite their ancient resilience, sea turtles face modern pressures. Six of the seven sea turtle species are threatened with extinction. Two are critically endangered. Five major threats impact sea turtles globally: 1) Fisheries bycatch, 2) Direct take and illegal trade, 3) Pollution, 4) Coastal development, 5) Climate change. Tens of thousands of sea turtles are accidentally caught in fishing nets each year. And more than half of all sea turtles have eaten plastic. But there’s hope. A movement to protect sea turtles began more than 50 years ago, and today, it includes thousands of people working around the world. Species once on the brink–like the Kemp’s ridley–are recovering. And the outlook for many populations is improving. Sea turtles connect continents, cultures, and ecosystems. Protecting them means protecting our oceans—and everything that depends on them.
