What if peace doesn’t come from changing your circumstances… but from changing the way you hold them? In this episode, I share another letter from my mother, Madelyn written near the end of her caregiving journey. It's a reflection shaped by illness, suffering, and an unexpected conversation with a dying Episcopal priest. As they speak about cancer, faith, humor, and emotional survival, Madelyn is struck by the priest’s words: “If there is a God.” She pushes back against the idea that happiness comes from getting what we want. Instead, she discovers how to find peace from the inside out — even when life leaves no space for personal freedom or rest. Madelyn’s perspective was shaped by something deeper — duty, devotion, exhaustion, humor, and a kind of love that didn’t need to be pretty to be real. The conversation with the priest leads her to reflect deeply on belief, doubt, and the nature of God — not as something “out there,” but as a presence within. This letter explores: How illness can reshape faith. The difference between belief and certainty. Spiritual survival in the face of suffering. Why faith does not always look confident or complete. This is not a story about losing faith. It is a story about faith that has been refined by experience. Her wisdom is steady and grounded: joy doesn’t arrive in perfect conditions. It grows slowly in the quiet work of acceptance, courage, spiritual curiosity, and the willingness to let go of what we can’t control. 🌿 Madelyn wrote: “My greatest joy in life comes from learning and growing mentally and spiritually. And the best thing about having peace and happiness from within is that I can stay more or less detached and still do what has to be done.” About the Series A Spiritual Journey Through Caregiving is adapted from Letters from Madelyn: Chronicles of a Caregiver, a collection of real letters written as Madelyn cared for her husband after his stroke. Each episode offers a window into her evolving spiritual beliefs and the emotional landscape of long-term caregiving. 👉 Subscribe for more caregiver support & encouragement: / caregiverhelp 👉 Learn about CaregiverHelp Support Groups: https://www.CaregiverHelp.com #CaregiverHelp #FaithAndCaregiving #LettersFromMadelyn #PeaceFromWithin #CaregiverSpirituality #HopeHumorHeart #ElaineSanchezWhat if peace doesn’t come from changing your circumstances… but from changing the way you hold them?
