While contemporary optical transceivers are undergoing continuous improvement, co-packaged optics (CPO) present an opportunity for enhanced power and cost optimization through the integration of optics directly onto the ASIC. Nevertheless, CPO technology introduces considerations regarding reliability, availability and serviceability. This presentation outlines our comprehensive evaluation of CPO to address these concerns. Metas data centers currently also utilize a diverse range of optical transceivers to support extensive AI-ML connectivity, necessitating robust link failure detection and long-term optical reliability. This discussion will detail our multi-month reliability testing methodologies for both current and next-generation optical technologies, including CPO, thereby ensuring scalable and dependable high-speed data center networks for AI-ML applications.
