It was unknown this version existed. Although fans are familiar with the released version from the “Invincible” album, as well as the demo version by Dr. Freeze from the “Invincible” sessions in 1999, it has been revealed that “Break of Dawn” (rumored to be initially titled as “‘Til The Break of Dawn”) was originally written and recorded as far back as 1982 during the Thriller sessions at Westlake Recording Studios in Los Angelos, with producer Joe Kehr, alongside Stevie Wonder, with the late Luther Vandross providing some background vocals. It was finished by August of 1985. The song was written and recorded around the same time as the original versions of “Threatened”, “Unbreakable”, “Invincible”, and many others. Shortly after writing the song, he began working further on this version, on & off, from 1982 during the Thriller sessions, until it was finalized in 1985, with Stevie Wonder and Joe Kehr. At some point, Luther Vandross was invited by Stevie to the studio, to provide additional background vocals for the song. It’s noted that Stevie had been writing what would later become a hit “Part Time Lover” before meeting with Michael, hence the heavy influence in this version. While the song runs around 5 minutes, the full-length version is over 9 minutes long. This is due to Michael, Stevie and others experimenting with ideas along with The Rag Tag Band jamming towards the end of the instrumental. Due to time constraints, the song was edited down to potentially fit on a vinyl if they ever decided to put it on an album. There are multiple solos during the 12” extended version, including additional vocals from the engineer Ana Maria-Rogers. While they all liked this version, Michael & Quincy felt that the song was too suggestive for his image at the time, as well as Quincy felt it was “too on the nose” of Stevie’s sound. So, they ultimately shelved the song, while Stevie released “Part Time Lover” for his album “In Square Circle” in 1985. It became a monster hit. Meanwhile, this version stayed hidden in the vault and the two distant cousins agreed to never release it. Michael would later on revisit the song, particularly during the Invincible sessions with Dr. Freeze, who had done his own demo version for Michael. They would rework the song on & off, from 1999 until 2001. This version would go on to be released for the Invincible album in 2001, although it was never released as a single. //// No copyright infringement intended.
