Canadian Fiddlers’ Advent Calendar 2018 Welcome to day 1! Originally this was supposed to be an Advent Calendar from Dec. 1 - 24, but due to the overwhelming response, it will cover the entire month of December. December 1 – Patti Kusturok & Jane Cory – Winnipeg, MB – “Reel Beatrice” & “Joe Cormier” I am so incredibly thrilled to be doing this series of wonderful Canadian fiddlers playing tunes leading up to Christmas and ultimately to the end of the year. I knew I wanted to do one day with in the month myself, and if this is anything like picking a number for the order of play at a fiddle contest, I know that no one ever wants to be number one. So, I took the dreaded number one spot! Joining me is my friend Jane Cory who lives just outside the Winnipeg perimeter in a town called Saint Norbert. Jane won the 2018 Canadian Grand Masters Fiddling Championship, and I thought it would be fitting to have her join me seeing that we are the only two Manitobans to have ever won this competition. I first met Jane at Arlington Beach, Saskatchewan at a fiddle camp. What I remember most about Jane is that she was 10 years old at the time, and she came up to me and asked me if I would teach her the Kenny Baker tune called Bluegrass In The Backwoods. At first I had my doubts that such a young person could actually learn to play this tune, but Jane quickly showed me that she was incredibly capable and ended up learning it in about 20 minutes! Since then I have loved following her career and seeing her grow in her music. I would like to thank Jane for joining me as well as the wonderful Daniel Koulack for accompanying us on the guitar. I hope you enjoy day one and I know you will definitely enjoy the other 30 days.
