The Des Moines Register's Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI) will roll for the 52nd time beginning on July 20th, 2025. Billed as the oldest, largest, and longest recreational multi-day bicycle ride in the world, it attracts tens of thousands of riders every year to ride from the Missouri River on the state's western border to the Mississippi River on the east side. (The largest single day count was 50,000 riders on the 50th anniversary of the ride.) I've been an avid bicycle tourist since I was a teenager. My first time experiencing RAGBRAI was in 1980, when I met and rode with someone who has since become one of my closest friends. Today, the ride is an annual reunion of sorts. The bicycle is still central to both mine and BJ's lives and our "team," Team Roadshow, is our bicycling family. This summer, I've been preoccupied with projects here on my Vermont homestead, however. I haven't gotten the miles in the saddle that I'd like to have had by this point. Last weekend, I went on what would be only my second ride of the year of 50 miles or greater. This video documents that ride. I am fortunate to live in one of the most beautiful and bicycle friendly places in the world, the great state of Vermont. I can literally walk out my door and ride my bicycle on gravel or pavement or trails that many people spend thousands to come and experience. I'm fortunate. There's no place I'd rather be! Come along with me for this 63-mile loop through some of eastern Vermont's most spectacular farming valleys as part of my RAGBRAI training. Only 1 week to go! 00:00.
