I’m sharing my family’s favorite Christmas cookie recipe: Peppernuts. These tiny, crunchy cookies are filled with a perfect blend of spices including cayenne pepper, cinnamon, ginger, allspice, and anise, which make them irresistible. Made with simple ingredients like sour cream and butter, they’re easy to make and a real treat for the holidays. Watch as I walk you through this Mennonite tradition and show you how to bake these delicious cookies your whole family will love. Recipe: Ingredients: • 1 ½ cups white sugar • 1 ½ cups brown sugar • 1 cup softened butter • 1 cup room temperature sour cream • 6 cups all-purpose flour (720 grams) • 1 tsp baking soda • ¾ tsp black pepper • ½ tsp allspice • ½ tsp ginger • ½ tsp cayenne pepper • ¼ tsp cinnamon • 1 tsp ground anise (or grind your own) Instructions: 1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line cookie sheets with parchment paper. 2. In a stand mixer, cream together white sugar, brown sugar, and butter until well combined. 3. Add sour cream and mix until smooth. 4. In a separate bowl, combine the flour, baking soda, black pepper, allspice, ginger, cayenne pepper, cinnamon, and anise. Mix well. 5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until a soft dough forms. 6. Roll out dough on a floured surface to about ¼ inch thickness. Use a small cookie cutter to cut into tiny circles. 7. Place cookies on the prepared baking sheets, spacing them closely as they won’t spread much. 8. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown. 9. Cool on a wire rack and store in an airtight container. If you have extras, freeze them to keep them fresh longer. Enjoy these spicy, crunchy cookies with a warm drink and watch as they quickly become a holiday favorite! Looking for the dough scraper I use?
