The Territorial Army (TA) troops from the Army's 51st Highland Regiment (Volunteers) arrived last Saturday, for the three-month mission, as part of Operation Fingal. The Territorial Army is a part-time force of volunteers, similar to America's national guard, who train regularly to back up regular British forces. Operation Fingal aims to rebuild parts of Kabul and establish central political institutions, so law and order can be brought to the city. The 53-strong TA force will provide security for the city's Camp Soutar, where they will guard Royal Engineers, who are carrying out the rebuilding work in the war-torn country. The TA soldiers will also patrol the surrounding area, in an effort to reassure residents and make links with the Afghans. As well as internal and external security, the men will provide a Quick Reaction Force to respond to road accidents, and other incidents, such as escorting vehicles and assisting troops under fire. The TA soldiers backed up their skills with a special four week training course ahead of being deployed.
