Anna Beeson and Elise Saunders are Therapeutic Life Story Work (TLSW) practitioners who have worked with permanent and kinship carers and adoptive parents in completing life story work. They highlight the value of the work which comes from being curious and wondering together, a shared journey between caregivers and the child, uncovering more than one person's perspective and capturing the child's voice, their narrative once they make meaning of their history. In TLSW children are offered support to dig deeper into their past with safety and support. To do this carers need to be ready to do the work also. It starts with a few questions: what does the child want to know who provided or wrote the information we have (test and verify) who is the information helpful to when is it helpful to share the information what sort of supports do they need to start internalising the life story work Anna and Elise highlight that sometimes the story behind the child is one person's perspective or it's not tested. With TLSW you can bring the different parts together to make meaning of history. Anna gives an example where a child starts school and the next piece of information is a suspension for 3 days 3 months later. That raises questions - what happened to the young person in between socially, emotionally and physically? Were there any moves A change of placement? Change of support? For every one piece of information Anna and Elise have 50 more questions. This information is shared therapeutically with the child. Digging deeper and considering when is the right time to share information, dependent on what support sits around the child and dependent on the capability of the child and the caregiver. There are also ways to manage ASD or other needs and developmentally appropriate and creative techniques are utilised. One child was told Mum came into care as a teenager. In fact they went into a group home very young which would have had a huge impact on her ability to support or give back to her children or form attachments. A new perspective for the child. Anna and Elise discuss the importance of reinforcing the connection with a family member at any chance you get. Down the track when the child wants to explore it, you have a starting point. Even where you have no information, Anna and Elise highlight how you can wonder together to make meaning of the child's story. TLSW can be undertaken pre placement, during placement or after placement. Or when things get rocky post that honeymoon period. It can be the anchor that brings everyone together, making meaning, growing relationships in safe spaces. Seems like a constructive way to spend one hour a week building relationships for the benefit of the child! 00:00 - Start 03:21 - Story work, life history work and Therapeutic Life Story Work 07:38 - Process starts with information from files and then broadening that - theres always many questions to answer and always corrections and reframing as you come from a place of curiosity 15:16 - Questions to ask to be the best detective for the child 18:49 - Family and community connections are important to have a starting point for the work. 20:48 - Use curiosity when you don't have content to make meaning.
