Although I never heard him sing it, I suspect he would've been familiar with this popular song. I learned "Alabama Bound" from recordings of Henry Thomas, Lead Belly, Papa Charlie Jackson, and two young banjo students who played it for me on guitar. My instrument is an 1888 Thompson & Odell "The Luscomb" banjo tuned ~ gDGBD.
