Hi, my name is Aaron Munson. I am a filmmaker, artist and cinematographer from Edmonton, Canada. In March of 2023, I was filming a science documentary in Uganda where I met Kavuma Kelvin David, a 30-year-old from Kampala who also works in video production. Kavuma told me about the aid work he is trying to do to help impoverished children in the Kotido District of northern Uganda. This region is classified as one of the poorest areas in the world with high rates of malnutrition resulting from hunger. Its population is largely dependant on agriculture and cattle rearing, but ongoing drought has made the situation there very dire. Scarcity of clean water, epidemic diseases, locust infestation, deforestation as well as high levels of unemployment all contribute to the humanitarian crisis that these people face. In addition to these challenges, most families cannot not afford to send their children to school, making it difficult to provide a sense of hope and optimism for the future. Kavuma sent me this personal statement to help people understand the need for assistance and his motivation for taking on this humanitarian work. "I am an orphan with neither a father nor mother. My parents passed away when I was 6-years-old. I reside in Kampala, Uganda and am the creative director in VELOCE FILMS, a production company that deals in video production, photography, graphics designing & digital marketing. From way back I have always wanted to help struggling people, especially young ones, as I am an orphan. I didn't have privileges to basic needs as other kids and it was a struggle to get school fees, access good food & clothing. I grew up on hand outs from well wishers and mercy of my only uncle who was a peasant farmer struggling to raise me. I clearly know what it means to sleep on an empty stomach, lack basic needs, have a low self esteem and be despised as the lowest amongst my peers. I have the desire and passion in my heart to help and empower people using what little I have. I have worked with humanitarian organizations for the past 5 years in Northern Uganda refugee camps as a humanitarian photographer and as the project coordinator for relief aid missions. During my recent work in Kotido District, I witnessed malnourished child dropping dead because of hunger. It was heart breaking and a shocking. UPON that day, I decided to put light on the suffering and struggles of vulnerable people using my camera skills for the whole world to see in order to help them. Thanks for your support" I am helping Kavuma to raise funds to provide food and school fees directly to 300 children within this community. With this initial fundraising campaign we are looking to raise 5000 Canadian dollars to cover school fees for 1 term (3 months) and provide 5kg of food (flour) to each child. Update videos and photos taken by Kavuma will be posted to show the impact that this direct aid has. All funds go directly to him to purchase food and pay for school fees. Thanks for your support.
