It's finally here. After more than 12 years, we got another mainline Ninja Gaiden game. No one really knew what to expect from this, because the primary developer wasn't Team Ninja - it was PlatinumGames, who has been struggling for the last few years due to misdirection and 'star' developers leaving. A lot of people weren't sure if they still had it in them to make a top class action game. We'll, I'm glad to say that not only did they do just that, Ninja Gaiden 4 is the best game Platinum has ever made, and it might even be the best action game since Ninja Gaiden II, all the way back from 2008. It's hard to rank clearly right now, because I still have so much to do and learn about the game, but it's absolutely safe to say that both the developer and the series have risen from the ashes and returned with an absolute masterpiece! This is a video of the "Purgatory" missions, which are essentially this game's Tests of Valor - hidden missions you can find in almost every chapter. There are a couple interesting things about them. For starters, you can choose a health handicap before starting each fight. The more life you give up, the better your rewards (coins and weapon EXP, neither of which are hard to come by...). So I recorded this video with the maximum health penalty, -75% HP, which they call 'Realm of Hell'. Secondly, the Purgatories have no affect on your score or end of chapter grade while you're playing the campaign, so they're totally optional. I find that a little funny because all of these are great and a lot of fun to play, unlike many Tests of Valor in previous games, or Alfheim missions in Bayonetta, which are mandatory for scoring or rankings. That said, you can still play all of these missions for score in a separate mode from the main menu, after you complete the game. So in that sense, its more comparable to the challenge missions in Vanquish or something along those lines. The grading is pretty lenient, too. I've never seen anything less than an SSS rank, but I suppose if you use items, it could bring your score down enough to lower your grade. Speaking of scoring, I'm not sure how much I care about it in this game yet, but it seems like it could be more fun than previous Ninja Gaiden campaigns, at least. Ideally, it seems like your goal is to enter Berserk mode, and let loose with UTs. Each time you hit an enemy while Berserk is active, you get 75 points, and the UT animation pauses the Berserk timer while it plays out. Beyond that, in order to most effectively build up your Berserk meter, you want to finish as many enemies with an Obliteration as you can, since each one adds a chunk to your meter. Hopefully this discourages mindless UT chaining, but I haven't tested it much. I've only replayed the campaign once so far and I got an SSS rank on nearly every mission without really thinking about score optimization, so the grading system seems very lenient. If I have a criticism, I'd like them to increase the score threshold for an SSS, maybe significantly. I'm writing this just before I get on a flight for a vacation in Japan. I've been playing this as much as I possibly could since it came out, hoping to get at least one video done before I left. I felt like it would be dumb to start posting campaign videos and immediately have to stop for a while, so I settled on a Purgatory video. I recorded all of this in one day, so you can probably see me getting tired and sloppy towards the end lol. But I'm going to keep playing on my Steam Deck while I'm away from home, so hopefully when I come back I'll be better at the game and will feel ready to upload a Master Ninja campaign plathrough. Until then, be sure to play the game yourself! It should go without saying that it's the best game of 2025, and probably well beyond that. 0:00 Intro 0:26 Chapter 1 3:52 Chapter 2 7:26 Chapter 3 10:43 Chapter 4 14:21 Chapter 5 17:24 Chapter 6 21:26 Chapter 7 24:44 Chapter 8 28:08 Chapter 9 33:13 Chapter 10 37:41 Chapter 11 43:12 Chapter 12 48:24 Chapter 13 52:41 Chapter 15 56:56 Chapter 16 1:03:00 Chapter 17 1:06:01 Chapter 18 1:11:09 Chapter 19 ----- Beat 'em Ups (e.g. Final Fight): • Beat 'em Ups 2D Action (e.g. Metal Slug): • 2D Action STG/Shmups (e.g. Dodonpachi): • STG Replays
