Oshin (おしん) is a Japanese serialized morning television drama (asadora), which was originally aired on NHK from 4 April 1983, to 31 March 1984. It was the 31st asadora to be produced. The 297 15-minute episodes follow the life of Shin Tanokura (田倉しん, Tanokura Shin) during the Meiji period up to the early 1980s. It was one of the country's most watched serials of all time and has aired in 68 other countries, with subtitles ranging from English to Arabic. Singapore was the first country in Asia and the world to broadcast the drama outside Japan in 1984. I remember watching it as a kid and being hooked on it, and that was one of the reasons I always have a big love for all things Japanese. Having Japanese family members also meant I was exposed to the language at a very young age. This piece here is the solo piano version of the serial’s iconic opening theme.
