Lund Humphries celebrates the launch of Luisa Roldán, a new monograph by Catherine Hall-van den Elsen, co-published with Getty Publications. This beautifully illustrated book presents the first overview in English of the life and work of Luisa Roldán (1652–1706). In this video author Catherine Hall-van den Elsen is joined in conversation by sculpture historian Holly Trusted. They introduce Roldán within a wider historical and social context, exploring her development as a sculptor from her early days in Andalucía to her later works in Madrid. They discuss the complexities of her oeuvre and reflect on the challenges she faced as a woman sculptor in early modern Spain. Speakers: Catherine Hall-van den Elsen studied Spanish art at La Trobe University in Melbourne, Australia. In 2018, Hall published a monograph of Luisa Roldán in Spanish (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas) and in 2020 an annotated bibliography in the Oxford Bibliographies in Art History series (Oxford University Press). She has contributed book chapters to Roldana (Junta de Andalucía, 2007), Women Artists in the Courts of Europe (Amsterdam University Press, anticipated 2021), and Polychromy in the Early Modern World: 1200-1800 (Routledge, anticipated 2022). Dr Holly Trusted FSA (formerly known as Marjorie Trusted) is a graduate of Cambridge University and the Courtauld Institute of Art, and a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries. A Senior Honorary Research Fellow at the Victoria and Albert Museum, she was previously Senior Curator of Sculpture at the V&A. She is also a Senior Research Fellow of the University of Glasgow. She is co-founder and trustee of ARTES, Iberian & Latin American Visual Culture Group. She is also co-founder and currently co-chair of the Public Statues and Sculpture Association and founding editor of the Sculpture Journal. She has lectured and published widely on sculpture. Her publications include British Sculpture 1470-2000 (2002), The Arts of Spain. Iberia and Latin America 1450-1700 (2007), The Making of Sculpture (2007), Baroque and Later Ivories (2013) and The Cast Courts (2018).
