Brugmansia, often called angel's trumpets, are stunning plants with large, fragrant flowers. To ensure their longevity and propagate new plants, taking cuttings and preparing them for winter storage is crucial. Taking Brugmansia Cuttings ➡️Choose the Right Cutting: ➡️ Select a healthy, ideally non-flowering stem tip with at least two nodes. Though flowering stem can be used if late season cuttings are taken. ➡️ Use sharp, clean pruning shears to make a clean cut just below a node. Prepare the Cutting: ➡️Remove any lower leaves that would be submerged in the potting mix. ➡️ Reduce the number of leaves to two or three, cutting any large leaves in half to reduce their aurface area. Rooting the cuttings in water: ➡️ Rooting typically takes 2-4 weeks. Once roots have developed, you can transplant the cutting into a larger pot. Preparing Larger Brugmansia Plants for Winter Storage ➡️ Prune your brugmansia to remove dead or damaged branches. ➡️ Trim back excessively long or leggy stems to encourage bushier growth. Potting and Watering: ➡️ Water the plant thoroughly, but reduce watering frequency as the plant enters dormancy. Winter Storage: ➡️ Move your brugmansia to a cool, frost-free greenhouse or a sheltered outdoor location. ➡️ Ideal winter temperatures range from 5-10°C (41-50°F). ➡️ Reduce watering to a minimum, just enough to prevent the soil from drying out completely. ➡️ Monitor the plant for any signs of pests or diseases, and take appropriate action if necessary. By following these steps, you can successfully propagate your brugmansia and ensure their survival through the winter months. With proper care, your plants will thrive and reward you with beautiful blooms in the following spring.
