After all, it is still humans who vote in democratic elections, make political decisions, and rule in the courtrooms. This being said, there are several areas where technology’s impact is already present. For example: automated decision-making where Artificial Intelligence tools help judges with scarce resources to draft court decisions, or assist authorities in developing new policies. AI has a vast potential to transform our societies for the better, but only with the premise that data used to train AI is reliable, objective, and bias-free. Widely used for circulating news and information, AI can sometimes be intentionally used to spread misinformation, undermining and harming democracy. With many such AI applications being owned and designed by private companies, their transparency and accountability are ever more urgent.
