What is Product roadmap & How to Create it? 5 key components of a product roadmap 1. Product Name 2. Product Vision 3. Product Objectives 4. Timeframe 5. Themes A product roadmap is a high level visual guide that answers what features, updates, or improvements are planned for your product, what goals & outcomes that your product aims to achieve & what is the high level timeline or sequence in which these features will be developed and released. Product name - The first thing you’ll notice in a roadmap is the product name prominently displayed at the top. This ensures that anyone reading the roadmap knows exactly which product it refers to. Product Vision - Next comes the product vision - a crucial element that keeps the team and stakeholders aligned on the ultimate goal. Product Objectives - Following the vision, you have a row for the objectives. These are specific, measurable and time-bound goals that define what you want to achieve within a particular timeframe & will determine if your product is successful or not. Timeframe - Next, you add the timeframe to the roadmap. I recommend dividing it into quarters—’Q1’, ‘Q2’ and then grouping ‘Q3’ & ‘Q4’ together. You might wonder - Why combine Q3 and Q4? Think of it like a weather forecast—it’s much easier to predict the near future, but planning six months or more in advance can be uncertain. By grouping the latter half of the year, you acknowledge that things might change, and you leave room for flexibility. Themes(features) Next up are the Themes — the high-level features or initiatives your team will tackle within each time frame. Themes give structure to your roadmap, showing what areas you’ll focus on and when. Now you know what a product roadmap is — and how to create one for your product! Oh, and one more thing: if you’d like a ready-made roadmap template to get started, you’ll find a link somewhere around this video. Feel free to grab it — no strings attached. Just a little product management love. Thanks for watching, and happy roadmapping!
