Lovely to meet you - I’m Susan Purney Mark. . My passion for stitch and textiles might have roots in my mother's and grandmother's creativity, but growing up in the 1960s, I thankfully charted my own course beyond the era of acrylic yarn and pompoms. I work extensively in surface design, exploring a diverse range of techniques and tools – combs, window squeegees, syringes, brushes, even floor mops. I'm always ready to experiment with unusual materials. My practice centers on building layers of complex patterns and textures using dyes, paints, wax resist, and screen printing. Recently, I've been working with vintage table linens as my substrate, transforming them through layered applications of color and texture. My current work explores mark making and asemic text – those intriguing word-like marks without literal meaning – using a palette of neutrals and limited color. This has drawn my practice toward abstraction, with landscapes as a particular focus. I love the interplay of layered color combined with folding, stitching, and successive applications of paint and dye. I'd love to connect with you beyond these videos.
