The Fishpond Caper My hometown of Ocean City, NJ had a mayor (1959-1963) whose illustrious service was celebrated by the installation of a fishpond adjacent to the city hall / fire department building. Certainly an honor, but its placement proved unfortunate. The Ladies Auxiliary hosted the dedication party around the pond, complete with tea sandwiches, iced tea and lemonade (Ocean City is a "dry" town). Just before His Honor's speech, a 2-alarmer sounded, people screamed, serving trays, drinks and fish all went airborne as the single-minded crew of OCFD Ladder No.1 roared out of the station and made an immediate left onto 9th St., diagonally bisecting the brand new “Nathaniel C Smith Goldfish and Guppy Pond”.
