Sacramento Wants the Tampa Bay Buccaneers: https://www.tampabay.com/archive/1990... We start in 1990. It is an interesting time for Sacramento. Everyone in town is still kind of salty about Al Davis not bringing the Raiders and NFL football to town despite the city council unanimously approving a $50 million franchise fee for him in addition to a new stadium. Locals were eager for an NFL franchise. In fact, the town was busy formulating a pitch for an expansion team after Al Davis backed out on this handshake deal with King’s owner Greg Lukenbill and city officials. There was also a little-known attempt to try to buy the Tampa Bay Buccaneers around the same time. Sacramento had football fever, but no one was all that interested in an NFL alternative, especially given how recent the USFL’s flameout was in the minds of the public. Yet, a non-NFL team just…sort of arrived. Those running the World League of American Football wanted a team in California. Like really, really wanted one. So they put a team in the California capital. An ownership group stepped up. Not because they wanted a WLAF franchise. But because it kept alive their NFL plans and a potential new stadium. The next year was spent trying to form this unusual side. A name was chosen, and the Sacramento Surge were born. No one really knew what to expect. It runs out, this was the start of something special. Sacramento was about the rule the football world.
