But a new season and a new home brought renewed optimism that they could conquer the world of football. Unlike the previous season, teams head into year two with a roster. Not everyone is back, but at least you have some guys. There would be a draft of free agents. More importantly, more guys from NFL rosters would be joining. The first year saw only a handful of NFLers play on loan in the WLAF. There was now a real desire to embrace the newly christened World League as a development system. Those players would be assigned to clubs after the draft. For the Surge, the name of the game was to find a quarterback. Play under center in 1991 was the major reason that the team didn’t reach the postseason. The team knew who they wanted. That would be David Archer. The passer was a solid starter for the Falcons in the 1980s and had served as a backup for several teams afterward. His college coach, Jim Criner, also happened to be offensive coordinator for the Surge. Getting him to Sacramento was part of a larger challenge. There was also the free agent draft. In the second round, the Surge took running back Mike Pringle, who had been incredible at Cal State Fullerton, even rushing for a then-record 357 yards a game. He’d later go on a break and set all kinds of CFL records. In the seventh round, the team took defensive linemen Bill Goldberg, who would find fame in WCW a few years after this, albeit with much less hair. Future ESPN analyst Louis Reddick would be taken later on in the draft, as well as Jay Gruden, although he wouldn’t make the team. With a team in place, it was time for the second season of World League football to kickoff. For the Sacramento Surge, it would be a wild ride with some downs but a lot more ups.
