Election Commission is Whatsapp Commission targeting Bengal Before Polls: Mamata Banerjee to SC

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee appeared in person before the Supreme Court to argue her own petition challenging the Election Commission of India’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in the State. A trained advocate, Banerjee became the first sitting Chief Minister to personally present arguments during a Supreme Court hearing. In her petition, Mamata Banerjee has alleged that the ongoing SIR process is opaque, hasty, unconstitutional and may lead to large-scale disenfranchisement of voters. She has raised serious concerns over the classification of voters under the ‘Logical Discrepancy (LD)’ category and the non-publication of the LD list on the official portal, claiming that this has deprived affected voters of transparency and a fair opportunity to respond. The matter is being heard by a Bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant.
