A jetty behind the garden fence right on the Schlei fjord – a sculptor works closely with nature – the task of the dike warden – a baroque garden modeled entirely on English garden architecture! All episodes of "Landträume" can be found here: http://bit.ly/landtraeume Subscribe to wocomoLIVING: https://goo.gl/g1YUqT The land between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea is known for its magnificent Nordic skies. Hinnerk and Linda Prohn have been enjoying the typical Schleswig-Holstein weather – a fresh breeze, fast-moving clouds, and a brilliant blue sky above – for many decades. The captain and his wife live in Arnis. Germany's smallest town is located on a promontory in the Schlei fjord. Because the fjord flows quickly into the Baltic Sea here, the Schlei is a popular sailing area. This also attracted the Prohns, whose sailboat is moored at their own jetty, just behind the garden fence. Linda Prohn grows mainly vegetables in her narrow allotment garden. It's important to the garden enthusiast to provide her family with fresh produce throughout the summer. But as soon as a breeze blows, the couple heads out onto the water. Originally built to mark the boundaries of fields and provide protection against the constant wind, hedges known as "Knicks" are now a typical feature of the northern German landscape. They are living hedges made of shrubs and trees. Andrea Gose picks flowering elderberries from these hedges in front of her house and makes syrup from them to serve as a refreshing drink. The sculptor has achieved a symbiosis of life and work on her remote farm. The materials for her works come from the surrounding nature, and her garden is both a workshop and a gallery. The dikes on Schleswig-Holstein's Baltic Sea are only a few meters high because the tide is not very strong. And yet, the office of the dike reeve plays an important role. Sebastian Matz lives on Gut Oehe directly on the Baltic Sea, and he is responsible for the dikes along his property. His father was the dike reeve before him, and before that, his father acquired the estate. Previous owners created a landscaped garden around the manor house with a magnificent avenue of fan-shaped lime trees. Sebastian Matz maintains the property, where there is always something to maintain or repair, because inheritance comes with obligations. With his wife Ursula, Wolfgang Heppelmann has been restoring one of the last single-hall houses of Danish origin for 20 years. The trained restorer does everything himself and preserves this legacy of rural living with meticulous attention to detail. The couple also draws inspiration from historical models in their garden design. Their most important model is Sissinghurst, although it is located in England, not Schleswig-Holstein. For their cottage garden, they need vast quantities of boxwood trees. They grow and graft them themselves.
