Scholar transport services have resumed in Gauteng after protest action, but the underlying problems remain. In this interview, Cameron McConkey, Regional Director at the Legal Resources Centre, explains why recurring breakdowns in scholar transport are not unexpected when the policy and regulatory framework is outdated and full of gaps. He outlines how these failures affect families and learners, including children walking long distances to school, and why this is a direct violation of children’s constitutional right to basic education under Section 29. He also explains that where learners require it, access to transport forms part of the right to basic education and must be properly planned and funded, not treated as an ad hoc crisis response. The conversation also looks at what communities can do to push for accountability, including engaging elected representatives, using public platforms, organising lawfully, and pursuing legal remedies where appropriate. Finally, the interview highlights the need for practical catch up support for learners who have missed school, including catch up plans and additional learning support.
